Program Description

Event Details

The morning book group will discuss Tevye the Dairyman by Sholem Aleichem, who has been called the Jewish Mark Twain. Of all the characters in modern Jewish fiction, the most beloved is Tevye, the compassionate, irrepressible milkman from the fictional village of Boyberik. He is best known to us as the inspiration for the character of the same name in the Tony award-winning musical Fiddler on the Roof.

This version of Sholem Aleichem’s heartwarming and poignant account of Tevye and his daughters was translated into English by Hillel Halkin. This book club is moderated by a librarian.  Copies of the book are available to check out on request at the front desk. Newcomers are welcome. Light refreshments will be served.

This book discussion is presented as part of the Yiddish Book Center's Public Libraries Program, a partnership with the American Library Association. Made possible by the Lilly Endowment, Inc.
