Program Description

Event Details

This is the second meeting of Yiddish Book Club, which is meeting virtually this fall to discuss 3 Yiddish titles in translation. We will discuss A Jewish Refugee in New York : Rivke Zilberg's Journal by Kadya Molodovsky, translated from Yiddish to English by Anita Norich.

Rivke Zilberg, a 20-year-old Jewish woman, arrives in New York shortly after the Nazi invasion of Poland, her home country, in 1939. Struggling to learn a new language and cope with a different way of life in the United States, Rivke finds herself keeping a journal about the challenges and opportunities of this new land. This fictionalized journal, originally serialized in 1941 in the New York newspaper Morgn-zhurnal, provides insight into the day-to-day activities of the large immigrant Jewish community of New York.

You may request a copy of the book in the library catalog. Please contact info@newprovlibrary.org if you would like assistance getting a copy of the book.

A library card number is required to register online. If you do not have a library card, contact info@newprovlibrary.org and ask the library to register you for Yiddish Book Club. Space is limited.

The Yiddish Book Club also meets on September 17 and December 17. You may register for as many meetings as you would like.

This book discussion is presented as part of the Yiddish Book Center's Public Libraries Program, a partnership with the American Library Association. Made possible by the Lilly Endowment, Inc.
