Program Description

Event Details

The Book Club will discuss A Jewish Refugee in New York : Rivke Zilberg's Journal by Kadya Molodovsky, translated from Yiddish to English by Anita Norich. This fictionalized journal, originally serialized in 1941 in the New York newspaper Morgn-zhurnal, provides insight into the day-to-day activities of the large immigrant Jewish community of New York.

Rivke Zilberg, a 20-year-old Jewish woman, arrives in New York shortly after the Nazi invasion of Poland, her home country, in 1939. Struggling to learn a new language and cope with a different way of life in the United States, Rivke finds herself keeping a journal about the challenges and opportunities of this new land.

Newcomers are welcome to attend the book club. The group is moderated by a librarian. Copies of the book are available upon request at the front desk. Light refreshments will be served.

This event is presented as part of the Yiddish Book Center's Public Libraries Program, a partnership with the American Library Association. Made possible by the Lilly Endowment, Inc.
